My favorite waterfall in all of Florence County and perhaps all of Wisconsin is Meyer’s Falls. Reachable by a 15 minute drive down a dirt road from the north or even a longer drive on a dirt road from the south, it’s pretty secluded. Though I’ve been there easily a dozen times, there’s only been one time when I was sharing this special place with another group. Autumn is prime time to enjoy these falls, because unlike many Wisconsin falls that are well shaded or surrounded by conifers, this falls just pops with the changing colors of maple, oak, beech and poplar. This photo was shot with a Nikon D90 at f8 at 1/50th of a second at ISO 200. Added to the Scenics and Landscapes Gallery on October 24, 2012.
I’m not sure there is anything in all of creation that matches the beauty of the autumn northwoods. The fiery leaves of the maple, the black and white of the birch tree and the green of the pines and hemlocks create a captivating natural tapestry like no other. This scene was captured in the Nicolet Chequamegon National Forest of northern Wisconsin on September 24, 2011 using a Nikon D50 and a Nikkor 18 – 200mm zoom lens set at 80mm. Aperture was f5.6 and a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second. Added to the Scenics gallery on September 23, 2012

The beautiful Northern Cardinal is one of the favorite and most well known of the garden birds. A century ago, the Cardinal was limited to the southern half of the United States but has steadily increased its range thanks to birdfeeding stations and appropriate plantings. Early in spring, often while the snow still flies, the male Cardinal begins singing in an effort to establish a territory and attract a mate. This stunning male came near my blind attracted to a feeding station and was captured with a Nikon D90 and a Tamron 200-500mm zoom set at 390 mm, aperture of F13 and a shutter speed of 1/160th of a second. Due to the low light conditions of winter I was shooting at ISO 400. The photograph ws taken on December 4, 2010. It was snowing outside which tends to increase the bird activity at feeding stations.
